The New Chichester Bike Project Opens at Shopwhyke Lakes

Chichester Community Development Trust (CCDT) are today announcing the launch of the new Chichester Bike Project, that is pedalling its way to Shopwhyke Lakes this February, bringing with it a wave of positive change for the community. The first stages of this project have been possible due to the vision of the Trust along with start-up funding from Sport England and the Places Foundation Impact Fund.

The Chichester Bike Project is more than just a bike initiative; it’s a community-driven force promoting sustainability, accessibility, and a love for cycling. This exciting venture will provide workshops, volunteer opportunities and bike refurbishments –  creating a space for bike enthusiasts and novices alike. Whether visitors are a seasoned cyclist or just starting, this project promises an inclusive space to learn, connect, and ride. It is all about making a positive impact, one pedal at a time.

The Chichester Bike Project is initially launching three workshops that are free to attend from XX February:

Earn-a-Bike: The Earn-a-Bike initiative enables individuals facing long-term barriers to employment the opportunity to refurbish and keep a donated bike. This programme promotes self-reliance and self-confidence through the opportunity to learn, acquire new skills and gain practical experience, providing a pathway to access affordable and sustainable transportation options. To an individual who has been struggling to make it on their own and dealing with the realities of housing insecurity, a bike can mean so much more – employment, confidence, mobility, fun and self-care! Places on the workshops will be available by referral only.

Fix-a-Bike: This weekly workshop, is designed for both volunteers and members of the public to use the bike shop facilities whether tinkering with donated bikes or bringing along participants’ own wheels. This session is not just about enhancing bike maintenance skills; it’s also an opportunity to build social and community connections in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. No prior experience is necessary – visitors can count on the guidance of skilled technicians who are always on hand. These sessions will run on Wednesdays from 4-8pm.  Attendance will be free for those fixing donated bikes, with a small fee for those seeking support to fix their own bike.

After School Bikes: Completely free for 8-18 year olds to learn how to fix their bikes.

An opportunity for young people to come along weekly and bring their own bike to work on with the technicians at The Chichester Bike Project. Here they will collaborate with a dedicated team, receiving guidance and assistance with general maintenance and repairs, taking place on Fridays from 4-6pm.

The building at Shopwhyke Lakes will also be home to ‘The Hub’ – a hireable space for community meetings, book clubs, stitch clubs and any small group gatherings. This can be booked through the Chichester Bike Project website.

Chichester Community Development Trust are looking for volunteers, enthusiasts, and anyone passionate about bikes to join them on this incredible journey. Their support is crucial in making this project a resounding success. Comments Clare de Bathe, CEO of CCDT, “This is the realisation of a long-held ambition to launch this initiative. We are so grateful for all the advice we have received from some of the country’s strongest examples of similar work, including the Bristol Bike Project, thanks to research grants from the Co-Op. We have seen the transformative impact this can have on people’s lives, and the support it gives to the whole community to enjoy greener living again. We’ve already heard from so many people who have a tired and broken bikes in their garage or shed. We’d love to take them on and turn them into opportunity, excitement, freedom or a means to connect with others for people in and around Chichester. This is very much a project for and by the community.”

All those interested are encouraged to follow The Chichester Bike Project on Facebook or Instagram [social media handles] for sneak peeks, announcements, and to find out ways to get involved!
