Work has been progressing well at the Marchwell Studios and are preparing for the next phase. The main-structure is now secure and is moving onto the internal fit-out stage, where the spaces will be prepared for creative and workshop use. 

Good Progress on Site

Construction has picked up pace, with major structural work now underway. The brickwork is complete, and installation of the new roof has begun. The timber for the roof has been especially sourced and will continue to arrive over the next few weeks.

Preserving Our Local Heritage 

A key part of the project has been carefully restoring the former listed stable buildings, making sure they remain true to their historic character while being fit for modern use. Preserving the character of the former Grade II listed stable buildings remains at the heart of the project. So far, this has included:

• Repairing and replacing brickwork on the Grade II listed buildings
• Strengthening walls and structural elements
• Restoring original features like rooflines, window openings, and decorative details
• Improving drainage to protect the buildings long-term

These interventions ensure the building retains its heritage significance while being sensitively adapted for modern use and continuing CCDT’s commitment to protecting local history for future generations.

Improving Access and Outdoor Areas

Alongside the main building works, significant progress has been made in preparing the site to support a future community of makers, creatives, and small businesses.

Recent improvements include:

• New pathways and access routes have been created
• Step-free access has been introduced where possible
• Groundworks and drainage are being prepared for future landscaping
• Infrastructure is being installed to support workshop equipment and shared facilities

These changes will help create a welcoming and functional space for the future makers’ community.

Working Together

The project continues to benefit from strong collaboration between all partners on site. Regular meetings, clear communication and proactive planning are helping to ensure the works remain on programme, within budget, and aligned with the overall vision.

Looking Ahead

With the roof installation now underway and the structure nearing completion, the next phase will focus on internal fit-out and specialist installations.

Step by step, Marchwell Studios is being brought back to life, creating a vibrant new space for creativity, enterprise and community use in Chichester.
