A truly extraordinary evening unfolded on the 14th of November as Chichester Community Development Trust (CCDT) and Sussex Heritage Trust hosted a captivating fundraising event at the beautiful Graylingwell Chapel. The event raised nearly £6,000, to be divided equally between the two charities, in support of their vital work preserving the heritage and strengthening the community of this special region.
The evening’s focus on community connection and celebration of heritage came to life through a one-of-a-kind event featuring antique evaluations led by the charismatic Rupert Toovey, Chair of Toovey’s Auctioneers & Valuers. Guests were enthralled as Rupert appraised and discussed fascinating items brought in by local residents, revealing their history and hidden value.
Among the highlights were:
- A potential sketch by Pablo Picasso, allegedly found in a bin in Paris.
- A Wild West-era gun.
- A gold Art Deco matchbook valued at £2,000, discovered in vintage clothing bought from a charity shop.
Following the evaluations, a live auction impressed attendees, offering exceptional experiences donated by generous supporters. Highlights included:
- A clay pigeon shoot for two at Crows Hall Farm.
- Fly-fishing for trout on the Leconfield Estate.
- A VIP Goodwood Festival of Speed Sunday package.
Guests also participated in a raffle with fantastic prizes, such as a hamper from Oast Farm Buxsted, a day out at the Weald & Downland Living Museum, family tickets to the Stansted Summer Festival, and a tour and tasting at Tinwood Vineyard.
The event was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of RW Armstrong, Toovey’s, and Flintlock Ltd.
Supporting Vital Community Services
The funds raised will make a meaningful difference to both charities. CCDT will use their share to support the running costs of Graylingwell Chapel, a cherished community hub, and the invaluable free-to-access programs delivered within it, including:
- The Chatty Café, providing a space for conversations and connection.
- IT Café, offering support to those looking to improve their digital skills.
- Games Club, creating moments of joy and camaraderie.
These programs ensure that no one in the community feels isolated or alone, especially during challenging times. The funds will also help maintain the Chapel as a warm, safe, and welcoming space for all.
Clare de Bathe, CEO of CCDT, remarked:
“The very special aspect of this evening was not only the incredible funds raised to help us deliver our important work, but also the fun and sense of togetherness it created. It was a joy to see people contributing in so many ways—whether they purchased a high-end auction item or simply bought a raffle ticket or two. Every penny counts, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves while supporting our charities.”
Looking Ahead
The funds raised at this unforgettable event will help CCDT and Sussex Heritage Trust continue their vital work preserving the heritage and supporting the community that defines Chichester and its surrounding areas.
