At the heart of every thriving neighbourhood is something more than bricks and mortar. It’s a sense of belonging. A shared purpose. A place where people feel connected, supported, and inspired.
This is the story of Chichester Community Development Trust (CCDT), and how community-led vision has shaped not just places, but lives.
Where it all began
CCDT was established in 2009 with a clear and ambitious purpose: to ensure that new developments in Chichester didn’t just create housing, but real communities. What started in Graylingwell Park as a response to a growing neighbourhood quickly became something much bigger, a model for how places can be built with people at their centre.
From the outset, CCDT took on a unique role: owning and managing community buildings and spaces, ensuring they would always serve the needs of local people.
But more than that, it set out to empower residents, giving them a voice, creating opportunities, and supporting them to shape the place they call home.
More than buildings
Over the years, CCDT has transformed spaces into vibrant community assets – places where ideas grow, connections are made, and opportunities are created.
From chapels and pavilions to studios and shared spaces, each building has been developed with purpose: to bring people together and support wellbeing, creativity, and enterprise.
This work goes far beyond physical spaces. CCDT delivers projects, events, and programmes that respond to real community needs, from youth initiatives and training opportunities to social enterprises and volunteering.
The result? Stronger, more resilient communities where people feel they belong.
A community-led approach
What makes CCDT different is its commitment to community leadership.
Everything starts with listening, understanding what people need, what matters to them, and how spaces can support their lives. This approach ensures that every project is rooted in local insight and shaped by the people it serves.
It’s about enabling communities, not just supporting them.
And that philosophy has helped CCDT grow, from a single development to a wider role across Chichester, managing multiple community assets and working in partnership with residents, organisations, and stakeholders.
Creating lasting impact
Today, CCDT is a key part of Chichester’s social infrastructure, helping to build a more connected, inclusive, and sustainable future.
Its impact can be seen in:
- thriving community spaces
- increased opportunities for local people
- stronger social connections
- and a growing sense of pride and ownership among residents
By blending community development with enterprise, CCDT has also created a model that is both impactful and sustainable, generating income, supporting jobs, and reinvesting in the community.
Looking ahead
The story of CCDT is still being written.
With plans to expand its reach, develop new spaces, and continue supporting communities to grow and thrive, the focus remains the same: putting people first.
Because great places don’t just happen, they are created, together.
